Care
PASA ensures that orphaned primates can heal at accredited wildlife sanctuaries.
The illegal wildlife trade has left thousands of apes and monkeys in desperate need of rescue and care. Through rescue, rehabilitation, and reintroduction, sanctuaries work tirelessly to help every primate in need receive compassionate care and a brighter future.
Through coordinating rescues and providing urgently needed resources to our sanctuary network, PASA helps to bring apes and monkeys to the safety of accredited sanctuaries. Some animals are too traumatized or too badly injured to live in the wild again, so for them, the sanctuaries provide a life-long home.
Many of the animals we rescue are listed as endangered or critically endangered, so their protection and ongoing care are critical in the fight against extinction.
PASA accredited sanctuaries are pioneers in primate reintroduction, giving rehabilitated animals a chance to return to their rightful homes. By rehabilitating primates in a sanctuary setting, they gain valuable social and survival skills necessary for living in the wild.

Rescuing Wildlife
Our alliance provides a safe haven for wildlife, rescuing hundreds of animals from illegal wildlife trafficking, the pet trade, and unsafe situations each year.
Most primate rescues are done in partnership with law enforcement efforts to stop wildlife crime and end bushmeat hunting. Sanctuaries provide a critical component in the fight against wildlife crime, providing a safe home and expert care for confiscated animals. With their deep relationships and knowledge of the community, they are a trusted partner.
Sanctuary teams are also called in to help with animals who are victims of road traffic accidents, powerline electrocutions, or attacks by farmers who see primates as threats to their crops.

Ensuring Expert Care
PASA's accreditation process covers every aspect of sanctuary management – from facilities to veterinary care, staffing, governance, and finances. Everything it takes to make the long-term commitment to primates in need.
We also work to continuously build the capacity of sanctuaries, ensuring they can provide the highest possible levels of care. PASA's Primate Care Training program brings expert training to sanctuary staff in the best practices of primate care, from veterinary techniques to behavioral management. Our sanctuary workshops also allow sanctuary directors to share expert knowledge on sanctuary management and primate welfare among their peers. Through these programs, sanctuary staff can provide world-renowned care to great apes and monkeys recuperating from physical and emotional trauma.

Offering Emergency Support
PASA's Emergency Fund is crucial, allowing us to respond rapidly and effectively to unforeseen disasters that significantly impact sanctuaries. Whether facing severe storms that damage chimpanzee enclosures or health emergencies like disease outbreaks, our fund provides immediate relief, ensuring the safety and long-term welfare of Africa's primates and the dedicated teams who care for them. The effectiveness of PASA’s Emergency Fund cannot be overstated. Our ability to provide immediate aid during a crisis ensures that no sanctuary faces emergencies alone.
