Coexistence
PASA works with sanctuaries to engage local communities in conservation.
In our rapidly developing world, maintaining peaceful and healthy coexistence between wildlife and human communities is an urgent challenge. Living alongside primate populations can be challenging for communities, especially in areas with few resources, while closer contact with humans can be fatal to already endangered primates. The proximity of wild primates and communities can lead to human-wildlife conflict and increase the potential for diseases spreading between humans and wildlife.
It is essential that communities across Africa have the knowledge and resources to thrive alongside their local wildlife. By partnering with sanctuaries and local communities, we are working to empower the next generation of African conservation leaders and to create solutions that help both primates and people.

Inspiring the Next Generation
Our pioneering education program, Kids for Compassionate Conservation, teaches children in Africa about the importance of the environment and how they can protect wildlife. Nearly all PASA accredited sanctuaries conduct public education and outreach programs, helping raise conservation awareness across Africa.
Topics including conservation, animal welfare, and the impact of humans on their environment are taught in a fun and interactive way. By reaching out to local children and their parents, we empower communities to value and protect local wildlife and their habitats, making a long-term impact on the conservation of wildlife.
This project produces a long-term, widespread change in attitudes and knowledge of wildlife protection among key conservation communities, which is urgently needed to save Africa’s endangered species from disappearing forever. By instilling environmental knowledge and compassion in children, we can inspire the next generation of African conservation leaders and build hope for the future.

Empowering Communities
Sanctuaries are deeply involved with local communities, fostering a profound respect for wildlife and involving them in conservation planning. We work together to understand their relationship with wildlife, helping develop innovative campaigns to reduce the demand for primate meat and provide solutions to human-wildlife conflict issues.

Together we support alternative livelihoods like beekeeping and coffee growing, helping local communities build more sustainable futures.

One Health
PASA’s One Health approach prioritizes the integration of human, wildlife, and environmental health to create a safer and healthier world for everyone. As ecosystems and habitats are degraded and humans come into contact with previously isolated wildlife populations, the risk of encountering emerging zoonotic diseases is increasing.
Sanctuaries work at the intersection of wildlife, ecosystem, and human health. We work together to reduce the risk of disease spillovers from the wildlife trade through demand reduction campaigns, raising awareness, and collaboration with local governments.
Through our extensive veterinary network and regular veterinary workshops, PASA helps to ensure that sanctuaries have the resources and expertise to identify and manage diseases that threaten both wildlife and humans.
To improve the health and wellbeing of local communities, we collaborate with sanctuaries to implement programs to improve both food security and access to clean water. Through habitat protection programs, we help protect vital ecosystems across Africa and safeguard the health of the planet.
