PASA Standards

What is a PASA accredited sanctuary?

A PASA accredited sanctuary provides a safe and secure home for African primates in need. The welfare of the individuals and the preservation of the species are of prime importance. The sanctuary uses an integrated approach to conservation, which can include rehabilitation and reintroduction.

As the largest alliance of wildlife sanctuaries across Africa, PASA works closely with currently accredited sanctuaries and aspiring sanctuaries to ensure they are equipped to succeed in their mission of providing high-quality care for primates in need.

Why does PASA maintain high standards for accreditation?

  • To give prospective members guidance for improvement.

  • To ensure that member organizations sustainably provide high quality animal care and implement effective conservation programs.

  • To uphold PASA membership as an indicator of excellence in the eyes of the wildlife conservation community, the animal welfare community, and donors worldwide.

PASA's Accreditation Process

Application phase:

Communication between an applicant sanctuary and PASA, submission of an application, review of the application, research on the sanctuary, and a decision about whether to proceed with an evaluation visit.

Evaluation visit:

A site visit and assessment by a PASA evaluator(s), along with the preparation of an evaluation report.

Decision on membership:

Analysis, discussion, and a vote on whether to grant accreditation to the applying sanctuary.

Accreditation Criteria

Any sanctuary considered for accreditation will be required to meet at least two or more of the criteria outlined below:

  • A sanctuary demonstrates an eagerness to share within the alliance and has a demonstrated track record of solution-oriented conservation activities as opposed to a predominantly research-oriented focus.

  • A strategically strong sanctuary located in a country within Africa currently without an existing PASA sanctuary or within a key transit route or range country.

  • A sanctuary that offers care for a primate species not currently represented within the Alliance.
